In 1969, Williams began his career as an actor in Los Angeles. His film credits include Hardcore by Paul Schrader, Private Benjamin by Howard Zieff (in which he also played the character of Sgt L.C. “Ted” Ross in the television series of the same name), and The Rookie by Clint Eastwood, among others. His firing from The Jimmy Stewart Show in 1971, at the behest of its star, James Stewart, sparked widespread controversy at the time.
The Cherokee Kid and The Sinbad Show were two of the numerous projects that he appeared in during the early to mid-1990s, which were directed by comedian Sinbad. Guess Who, a Bernie Mac picture in which he portrayed the grandpa, was his first cinematic role. Moonlight, Moesha, Suddenly Susan, Minor Adjustments, L.A. Law, Night Court, Magnum, P.I., Hill Street Blues, Gimme a Break, The Jeffersons, The Dukes of Hazzard, T.J. Hooker, The Waltons, Knots Landing, What’s Happening!!, Good Times, Quincy, M.E., S.W.A.T., Gunsmoke, and That Girl are among his Williams also serves as the presenter of the annual Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation telethon, which is shown nationwide on television.
